3 things you should stop doing for your wedding!

Instead of talking about what are the trends for 2016, how ’bout a few wedding stylists coming together to tell you what are the trends that have come and gone ( and should not be repeated till probably 10 years later)?

Together with Shuying of MerryLove Weddings and Liyi of Styled Story, the two most prominent props and concept curators in the local wedding industry we have come up with 3 ideas that have been over and done with. Shuying of Merrylove said locals should avoid doing these for 2016 because its has been done to death in Singapore! Read on brides-to-be.

First, i have to put a disclaimer. these ideas have been used by us before too, but seeing so many self DIYs replicas, if its better than usual its fine but if its carelessly curated and items are chugged into a corner just to fill empty spaces. then please stop ruining your own wedding photos.

A pre-wedding styled shoot should be

  • about the couple – like duh? imagine a bride coming to you in her super glam princess gown with those poofy under things and the wedding stylist advised her to take a in-the-forest shoot. Tak match right?
  • about the story behind the couple – like what are the things you enjoy doing together? even a simple answer like “reading” will give a wedding stylist 1001 ideas on how to style your wedding.
  • pleasantly curated to say the least – its about you and your story. why would you put random things in there that doesn’t mean a single thing to you?
  1. Flee when you see the Teepee

Teepee is so so so passé, it has been overdone (in many cases badly). The original idea of Teepee weddings was first sighted in US, the meaning of it is similar to getting married under a chuppah. It was best used for brides who are wild, free and can totally rock a boho look. It definitely was the best boho trend two years ago, like i said TWO years ago.

Here is a photo of the teepee shot done right.

here’s an alternative, speak to your wedding stylist for similar symbolic backdrops like door frames.

2. Stacking Wine Crates or whatever boxes for that matter.

Stacking is a great idea, wine crates just because its free and you can pick it up from a wine shop is awesome. But what the hell are you putting in there matters, no?  Putting books i geddit ( everyone read mah ), poms poms i geddit ( its colorful, it adds texture, its pretty ). I see people putting empty jars, bottles with no flowers, a bedside lamp ( ???) , colorful straws (wtf?), rattan balls ( ok unless you are Singapore’s sepak takraw couple?) and nothing in it??

what i am trying to say is, it doesn’t tell anything about you. and if its not pretty, what can be more meaningless? so speak to someone who cares in the first place, anal about putting things in there that means something rather than to fill up spaces and someone aesthetically inclined would help, really.

Styled story uses crates as side accents to these florals but as you can see the ornate gold frame steals the show. and this is how it should be done.

most stylists also used these crates simply to elevate heights, to create layers and basically stacking to create space. but bear in mind, do you even have that much stuff to put in it?

instead of using wine crates, try using these nicely aged ladders, vintage suitcases or even vintage bar cart to elevate height.

3 . Dreamcatchers – another boho trend that came and gone with the wind.

I have done it personally. Used it for a couple of weddings then realized it is impractical for outdoor shoot and basically doesn’t tally if theres no bed in the picture. The idea of a dreamcatcher is to sieve out your bad dreams and let the good ones through right? ok, unless you sleep under the tree or at the wedding venue, otherwise then what? right now, dreamcatchers should be pinned under the interiors board for your new up and coming flat. not on your wedding board.

Shamelessly, I have to say we did it right with this pic.

In place of Dreamcatchers, I also see the trend of Macramé backdrops. Hence, hand-knotted by myself.

Fringed Kimono and Dress my own

The grand idea came when ( of course ) i got pregnant, my last pregnancy was a breeze and I really thought i had the pregnancy glow the first time. So this time and DEFINITELY my last pregnancy, i really wanted to document it. When i first told the crew i was pregnant, it seemed like a sure thing to do. Shuying and Fiona were super excited and I definitely got hyped. But then, the nausea came, the cramps came, the acne came, the-whatever-you-can-think-of-pregnancy-symptoms all came I kinda was bouncing around the idea again. Shuying was however reassuring as she is, told me this would be my last time…

Shuying of Merrylove took the liberty to conceptualize something that was truly me, a boho-chic wild child moodboard. Xara Lee, my go-to makeup artist would doll me up, while Fiona of Smittenpixels would be the designated photographer. Celeste from Olive Suite to the last minute rescue with the chantily lace robe. Yup an all girls team, but come to think of it, its so ironic. If you are going to be in lacey-see-through-undies. half naked with a big belly and then showing the world your photos, who cares if you have an all girls team or not. but whatever it is, it made me more comfortable as they were people i worked with all the time.

Shuying’s moodboard made my heart flutter, a bed in the lush greenery. my boudoir shoot is in the woods, like where a wild child should be. hence, she and her elves had to drag a bed and lotsa fluffy pillows into the forest. and the typical me would be, if theres a bed there should be dream catchers. so i DiY-ed a few dream catchers and hung it on trees. and so this materialized…

we shot late in the evening, where the lights are about to dim to create that dreamy feeling. to be honest, i don’t really enjoy taking photos. much less alone. I was really skeptical and feeling the jitters but the girls were reassuring. and i am glad i did it. I felt bad for Fiona though, she had a lot of ideas and poses for me but i shot them down one by one. Eh i don’t wanna show armpits so don’t ask me put my hands up ah, i told her. And because i was never in front of the camera alone before, i never knew how tiring it could be as well. I thought just standing there was easy, by the end of 1.5 hours i was ready to call it quits. But i am glad i managed to squeeze another 15 minutes out of myself… stay tuned to the end.

I don’t really know what i wanted to do, but i knew for sure what I don’t want to do. I don’t want those typical maternity boudoir shoot wearing white in the bedroom kind of shots. And having a professional stylist as a friend really helps, Shuying knows me well by now i would say and Fiona definitely knows me but is still trying to push my boundaries. youngsters these days! Its a good thing though, I am a huge fangirl fan-mom of her work. simply because her photos always look clean and exude so much class. It couldn’t be anyone else doing my maternity shoot.

If you haven’t heard, Xara is my go-to makeup artist. I kept wanting to explore other make up artists but just couldn’t let her go. sounds like an obsessive boyfriend i know but its really hard to find someone you are comfortable with and knows all your facial flaws and then transforms you into something graceful and beautiful. if you think how i look is who i am then you are wrong, i don’t act demure at all. all my friends said, i look prettiest if i sit still and i keep my mouth shut. The thing i like about Xara is, how she does my brows and eyes.

so i was all tired out after this, but there are some more locations that we really want to feature. there are not many places in Singapore left that is not going to be urbanized, as we speak these places are now slowly being demolished. So i persevered for another 15minutes and Fiona managed to get some great shots out of it.

wildchildmat3

I thoroughly enjoyed the shoot, and i dare say we now do it right. so preggers please come forth if you want a conceptualized shoot for yourselves or your family. not only preggers, we are also calling out to all women for boudoir shoots.
